Official View of Your Driving License.

The official way to share your driving license details with anyone including your employer, a prospective employer, an employment agency, a car hire company or anyone else is to generate a one-time use check code yourself, and either print off the driving licence summary along with the check code and the last eight characters of your license, or make a note of the code, last eight digits of your driving license number and pass it on to whoever you want to see it.

Check Code.

The person that would like to see your license will then have to go to the following link https://www.gov.uk/check-driving-information enter in the last eight characters of your driving license number along with the check code and they will then be able to see your driving license, they will always have to ask you for this information. The check code is valid for twenty-one days, and has a one-time use only, to protect your driving license details from being shown to unauthorised persons.

Yet many people, including employers, view driving license via the view your own driving licence link and think that this is ok, but this is not ok and is designed for the owner of the license to view his or her own driving licence and can be accessed anytime by anyone that has your driving license number, national insurance number and postcode, such as your employer.

A More Secure Way.

A more secure way to view your driving license information is via the Government UK Verify Portal and this is a much more secure way to store your driving licence information as one has to enter a user name, password and a two-step authentication to gain access to ones driving license details. This should be the only way that your license can be viewed as you are logging in with secure credentials, and would then force others to ask you for a check code in order to view your license details.

Two-Step Authentication.

A two-step authentication is a user name and password that has to be entered on the Government Uk Verify Portal followed by a code that is sent to your mobile phone in order to gain access. Without these, you will not be able to view your driving license details and it makes your account more secure forcing anyone that wants to check your driving license to use the check code route.

Even if someone has your user name and password and tries to gain access to your driving license, a code is sent to your mobile phone and as you will have your phone with you, this will alert you that someone is trying to breach your driving license account.

Conclusion.

As you can see there are three different ways that your driving license data can be viewed, the first way is by entering your driving license number, national insurance number and postcode and is not a very secure way, the second way is via the Government Verify Portal which is very secure, and the third way is by being asked for a one-time use check code that has a time limit.

To make your driving license data very secure, the DVLA should turn off the access to ones driving license details via the driver’s number, NI number and postcode method, and make the Government UK Verify Portal the only way to access ones driving license. From there, one can issue check codes and be safe in the knowledge that they are going to the person that you want them to go to, and that person will only be able to view your information once.
